"Drawing On...My Life, My Family, My Culture" Project

outlines of

The Inspiration: The project was inspired by a courageous group of women in South Africa searching for answers in extremely difficult conditions who used visual and literary arts to tell their stories. Understanding that youth face a number of obstacles, many of which are life-changing, we aimed to provide constructive and positive alternatives to potentially destructive behavior by giving youth a chance to tell us who they are using various art mediums.

The Mission: The artistic mission of the project is to expose at-risk youth on Franklin Road to visual and literary art forms that promote self-esteem, self-awareness, and community pride that ultimately give youth a strong resolve to turn away from dangerous behavior. As a result of the art experiences, we hope to assist the Franklin Road community in an ongoing effort to empower and educate their youth and families by continuing to reinforce the accomplishments the community strives to achieve: safety for their children and stimulating learning programs.

The Project: Youth were encouraged to explore themselves both ouwardly and inwardly to expose the different qualities of their character and environment that make them unique. Youth used canvas, markers, package tape and acrylic paints to capture their life story. The goal of this project has been to help students see the many strengths they posses and to encourage them to draw on those strengths as tools for change in their community of Franklin Road.

This project was made possible with the combined efforts of the Art Station - Big Shanty, Cobb County Parks Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department, the Grassroots Arts Program, the Las Colinas Apartment Complex, and the Franklin Road Weed & Seed Program.
